The Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana will be celebrating its 75th Anniversary on October 21, 2019. Over the next year, we will be celebrating this milestone with events, activities and celebrations. We hope this opportunity will bring a renewal of hope to our Diocese and bring each of us closer to one another as we unite in the heart of Jesus Christ.
Some history on the diocese:
· The Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana was established by Pope Pius XII on October 21, 1944.
· John George Bennett was consecrated first bishop of the Lafayette See on January 10, 1945. His successors have been John Joseph Cardinal Carberry, Bishop Raymond Gallagher, Bishop George Fulcher, Bishop William L. Higi, and the current ordinary, Bishop Timothy L. Doherty.
· Today the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana is comprised of 24 counties in North Central Indiana extending from Illinois to Ohio. The Diocese now includes 61 parishes and 20 schools serving approximately 100,000 Catholics.
· A diocese, meaning ‘administration’, is the district under the supervision of a bishop. A diocese is divided into deaneries and parishes.
